Fishing Lodgings

It is often fun to make a bit of an adventure of any fishing trip, staying over free to stay as late as you wish casting into the gloaming or rising whilst the dawn mist still hangs over the river.

I have picked out a variety of places to stay that are close to the river, fish camp where you pitch your tent on the banks and those where the train will bring you within walking distance.

Ilsington Eco Lodge

The Eco Lodge at Ilsington was completed in 2016, one of the most remarkable buildings of its kind to be built in recent times.

Its genesis was as a private funded centre for the continuing Game Conservancy research into chalkstream salmon. Today it discretely houses state-of-the art scientific equipment in an annexe that tracks every single tagged salmon that leaves or enters the River Frome, identifying not just numbers but individual fish so we now are able to tell for the first time ever exactly when, and for how long, each fish is in the ocean.

However, the Lodge with its futuristic design and slightly James Bond baddie-lair feel, is also a fantastic place to stay. The main living area has a panoramic view over the water meadows, a log burning stove and with seating on the outside deck.

There are three en-suite bedrooms, large kitchen, and rod/drying/washing room. There is also Wi-Fi. Outside there is ample parking, dog kennel and last but not least, five miles of wild trout River Frome fishing to explore, plus the sea trout and salmon at Holmewood as an added option.

The lodge is self-catering, let on an exclusive basis for two nights or more. Add as much fishing as you require with non-fishing guests are most welcome. Dorchester is our local market town with plenty of dining choices though you will be hard pressed to do better that our local The Wise Men.

Avon Springs Shepherd’s Hut

Avon Springs has long been one of our most successful fisheries that combines both river and lake fishing, run by the friendly and helpful Barrie Bawden who follows in the footsteps of his father who created the lakes some fifty years ago.

New for 2020 is the Shepherd’s Hut which is tucked away with a view directly over the River Avon. You might, given a helpful wind, even make a cast directly from the veranda into the river itself!

The Hut sleeps two in a double bed; bring your own bedding and pillows. On-site facilities include: Electricity. Wi-Fi. Parking. WC. Hand sink with hot/cold water. Fridge. Microwave. Kettle. Dining area. Basic cooking/washing facilities. Cutlery, crockery, glasses and pans. BBQ; bring your own charcoal.

Check in at noon. Check out by 10am. Minimum age 8 years. Buy at least one full river/lake ticket for day of arrival. Under 16 years no charge when sharing a rod. Fishing times 9.30am-10pm. To book call or email.
