Fishing Cottages & Lodges

Fishing will turn any holiday into an adventure and what better than staying in a beautiful place with fishing on the doorstep. As we like to say: Wake. Fish. Sleep.

My criteria in handpicking these wonderful places is that the owner of your holiday home is also the owner of your fishing. I have always believed that fly fishers are the best hosts who will want you to enjoy all the things they enjoy.

Our cottages, lodges and shepherds’ huts are available for 2-14 nights for singles, couples and small parties.

Ilsington Eco Lodge

The Eco Lodge at Ilsington was completed in 2016, one of the most remarkable buildings of its kind to be built in recent times.

This is truly a getaway-from-it-all, set in the beautiful chalkstream water meadows, miles from the nearest habitation. The single storey building is wrapped around the panoramic living area, with amazing views on which you will never see another living soul.

The lodge features a large living room, dining area, kitchen, rod room and three en-suite bedrooms. One double and two twins. The centrepiece of the living area is a log burning stove and glass doors that open on to the outside deck. There is excellent Wi-Fi. Dogs are welcome.

The 4 & 7 day rentals include fishing each day at Ilsington and the option (at no extra charge) to travel the 12 miles downstream for salmon and sea trout fishing at Holmewood just above the tidal mark of the River Frome.

Dorchester is our market town with plenty of dining choices though you will be hard pressed to do better that our local The Wise Men.

Hemsworth Huts
with wild trout fishing on the River Allen

It is hard to find a more peaceful, rural get-away-from-it all idyll than the Hemsworth Huts. Set amidst a 1,000 acre organic estate these unique shepherds huts are on the edge of unspoilt water meadows, circling a small lake and stream with the River Allen a short walk across the meadows.

The fishing is an all wading and all wild 775yds/710m beat where you will catch perfectly speckled brownies and gorgeous grayling. This is the sort of fishing where you will use your shortest, lightest outfit and delight in the freedom of summer wet wading.

There are two huts that sit on the edge of a woodland clearing. Hemsworth One is the primary shepherd hut which has a double bed, kitchenette with running water, gas cooker, electricity and log burner. There is a WC and a separate shower. Hemsworth Two is a smaller version of One with a single bed which makes up into a small double and again has electricity, log burner, running water and WC.

Outside there is seating and a firepit.

Hemsworth One. The 2 night weekend or 3 night midweek rental includes unlimited fishing on the River Allen from 3pm on day of arrival to dusk on day of departure. No wi-fi and limited 3G signal. Dogs welcome. Maximum party of two, including children.

Hemsworth One & Two. The 2 night weekend or 3 night midweek rental includes unlimited fishing on the River Allen from 3pm on day of arrival to dusk on day of departure. No wi-fi and limited 3G signal. Dogs welcome. Hemsworth Two is best for one adult or shared by two young children.

Notes: If you book Hemsworth One Hemsworth Two will be left vacant to give you exclusive use. Though you have unlimited fishing we recommend that you fish no more than two Rods at any one time to reduce the pressure on the fish. This is an all catch and release water.

Lock Keeper’s Cottage

The paint is barely dry on Lock Keeper’s Cottage as we welcome our first visitors in 2022.

Extensively renovated and extended from what was originally a 2 up/2 down cottage for the lock keeper (when the Itchen Navigation was navigable up to Winchester) into a sumptuous house.

The word cottage does not really do justice to this spacious home (2,250 ft2) which is ideal for a family or house party, with four bedrooms, three bathrooms (two en-suite), a big kitchen, living spaces and orangery which opens onto gardens and the river.

The weekend and weekly rentals include two days of fishing for four at with the option to add more fishing if you wish at Qing Ya Xi or elsewhere. Dogs are welcome as are children of 10 years or older. The maximum party size is seven, including children. There is an artificial grass tennis court which is available for use at the discretion of the owners.

The Lock Keeper’s Cottage is close to Southampton, the New Forest and the cathedral cities of Salisbury, Winchester and the coast is just 15 miles.

Deveronside Lodges
with private fishing on four miles of the River Deveron

The Deveron is one of our finest salmon rivers; it is the fifth most prolific in Scotland for migratory fish with spring, summer and autumn runs. It also holds the UK record for the largest salmon caught on a fly.

With your lodge at Deveronside you have fishing on four beats, with 25 named pools, that you will rotate across during your stay. Upper Netherdale Beats 1 & 2, Carnousie & Ardmiddle and Laithers all offer great scope for all levels of salmon fishing ability. For those just starting out fly fishing, or for just a change of pace, there is a private stocked loch which is on hand if river conditions are difficult.

The season opens in early February for salmon and mid-March for trout, the season closing at the end of October. A ghillie is included with Waterside Lodge and on request with Ferry Cottage.

Waterside Lodge, beside the Carnousie beat, is the luxury of the two lodges which is suited to a house party or a combined fishing/family holiday. It sleeps ten with five bedrooms and five bathrooms. There is an extensive kitchen, dining room and conservatory living area. To the rear of the Lodge is an annex with a games and TV room ideal for children plus the laundry and rod room.

Ferry Cottage is more typically taken by dedicated fishing parties, leading directly onto the Upper Netherdale beat. It sleeps seven in four bedrooms with three bathrooms but is generally recommended for parties of four or five. There are good living and dining areas plus a fully equipped kitchen. In the summer, the outside is ideal for al fresco meals with amazing views over the river.

Waterside Lodge. The 7 day rental includes 6 days fishing for 3 Rods (up to 6 available) on the River Deveron, access to the trout loch and a daily ghillie. Lodge let on a self-catering basis. Cook available on request at extra cost. Wi-fi. Dog kennels outside, no pets inside. Maximum party of ten, including children.

Greamachorry Cottage
with fishing on six private lochs for trout, salmon and char

Make no mistake, this is as a remote fishing and holiday location as you are ever likely to find, isolated amidst the 20,000 acre Achentoul Estate where you are just 40 miles south west of John O’ Groats as the crow flies.

At one time Greamachorry was a shepherd’s cottage but today, extensively renovated, it retains amazing views over the Sutherland highlands beside Loch Culaidh. Six lochs, which range in size from an acre or two to over a thousand are yours to fish from boat or bank. The predominate species is brown trout, mostly in the ¾-1lb range but 4lbs is not uncommon with a recent record fish of 5.5lb. There are also the occasional salmon and Arctic Char. Fish are largely caught on teams of two or three wet or dry flies fished in a rolling wave.

The season opens in mid-March and runs through to the end of September. June, July and September are regarded as the prime months with some of the lochs having a summer Mayfly hatch. The loch fishing is included with the rental of the cottage for whoever is staying in the cottage. The Forsinard Flyfishers Club offers fishing on another 41 lochs in the area for a £40 fee with under 18s free.

The cottage sleeps six in four bedrooms with one bathroom. There is plenty of downstairs living space with a spacious kitchen, dining and sitting rooms. Heat and hot water are provided by a log fired Rayburn. There is a gas oven and hob. Electricity is provided by a generator which is sufficient for most needs. There is good Wi-fi to 90mW.

The 7 or 14 day rental includes unlimited fishing on the six lochs with use of boats. Wi-fi. Dogs welcome. Maximum party of six, including children. The cottage is accessed from the A897 via a 2.4m private road which is suitable for most cars. The local town is Helmsdale, 18 miles. Inverness Airport with direct flights to UK and European destinations is 86 miles.
