Weekly River & Hatches Update
Nothing beats wrapping up on a crisp, autumn day on the chalkstream chasing grayling! Yes, that’s right grayling season is underway and many fly fishers head to the quiet rivers, making the most of the shorter days and the excitement of a new challenge.
Weather:
The weather is looking unsettled this coming week, meaning further spells of rain or showers, possibly accompanied by some strong winds. However, there will still be dry spells of which you can enjoy the warm autumn sunshine. Highs of 16 degrees. Sunrise: 07:32 Sunset: 18:10 GMT. UV: Low, Pollen: Low, Pollution: Low.
River Flows:
The recent September rain was hugely welcome and promising, but we are still in need of more with all regions receiving 1mm or less rainfall last week. In fact, it has been the driest week for England since late April, which has unfortunately impacted river flows across the country.
Hatches:
By October it is getting easier to match the hatch as there are fewer and fewer hatching species as we approach the end of the year.
Fly Patterns:
There have been some great grayling catches on classic PTNs and small brown shrimps patterns this last week. Now that trout season is over, focus on the classic grayling flies like the Grayling Pink Bomb and Grayling Witch – anything with a flash of pink or red!
Our Seasonal tips:
Use the finest tippet and cast well upstream or away from your target fish letting the current do the rest for you. Read the water carefully and adjust your strategy according to the conditions. The cooler water temperatures often mean fish will be more active during midday when the sun comes out.
