Weekly River & Hatches Update
August is the month that defines sight fishing when stealth, patience, concealment and presentation are at a premium. Be prepared when fishing in theses warmer temperatures, stay cool, well covered and get ready to catch the magic evening rise.
Weather:
Where’s the rain?! It’s going to be another very warm week ahead with gentle breezes and highs of 27 degrees. Look out for the occasional shower too! Sunrise: 05:50 Sunset: 20:30 GMT. UV: High, Pollen: High, Pollution: Low. Pressure: 1019mb, Rising
River Flows:
Unsurprisingly, with the extremely dry weather we are having, the river flows are running low. Those rivers that are in critical condition such as Cottons Fishing Temple, Hill Deverill and Exton Manor Farm we have unfortunately had to close for the short term. On the upside, we have still received some fantastic fishing reports with an abundance of healthy trout and grayling sighted in the pristine waters.
Hatches:
Olives, sedges and midges are the three main hatches for August. When nothing is moving much on the surface, observe the fly life and match with the nymph.
Fly Patterns:
Freshwater shrimps have been spotlighted this week! At certain times of the year shrimp, account for 80% of a trout’s diet. Ignore them at your peril. Pink or olive shrimps, size 12 -14 will work a treat!
Our Seasonal tips:
Lighter gear is the one. Think harder about lighter tippets, concealment and keeping the sun to your face. Shadows and line flash will give you away in a moment. Always handle fish with care and return them safely as quick as possible.
