Weekly River & Hatches Update

August fly fishing calls for adapting to summer conditions. There is scarcely a time when it is quite impossible to catch a good trout. The countryside continues to bloom, and the banks of well-fished rivers are somewhat less crowded. Look out for our special offers this month too!

Weather:

Looks like we’re set for another heatwave going into next week, with highs of 28 degrees. Sunrise: 05:46 GMT. Sunset 20:36. GMT. UV: High, Pollen: High, Pollution: Low. Pressure: 1014 mb, Falling.

River Flows:

The river flows are still ranging from between low to normal as rated by the Environment Agency. With the Itchen still flowing at a normal rate. The Test is slightly low but continues to fish well.

Hatches:

Olives, sedges and midges are the three main hatches for August.

Fly Patterns:

Pheasant Tails and Hare’s Ear Nymphs as well as small sized Perigons, continue to shine this week - reaching the deeper pockets of water and imitating a number of insects. Dry fly wise, feedback suggests the McPhail Bubble Wing Caddis in Chocolate and Cinnamon and a selection of CDC Mayflies are catching well. See below the beautiful photo of the brownie, caught by Ashley at Middleton Estate. Or another suggestion, fishing hi-viz nymphs under a New Zealand indicator!

Our Seasonal tips:

Being in the height of the summer, the warm weather continue to make fishing conditions challenging. Please make sure you handle fish with extreme care and keep them out of the water for as little time as possible – to avoid stressing the fish. Consider fishing areas where fish may congregate either in deep pools, under trees or in the weed beds. This may make it more challenging but will most certainly be rewarding!
