As a Guide and Instructor, one of the questions I am most often asked is whether river fishing is more difficult than lake fishing. My answer, put quite simply is, “No, but it is distinctly different and you will need to adapt your strategies and techniques”. So, that in a nutshell is what this introductory day is all about. We take the skills you have learnt on stillwater and adapt them to defeat the considerably wilier river trout. You will alter your casting, rig your rod and line differently, have a whole new boxful of flies, be more observant of fly hatches and take your cue from the prevailing weather conditions |
|||||||||||
Now I can’t pretend you will catch a sackful of fish on the first day, but I will promise that you will achieve a new level of skill, technique and understanding that will stand you in good stead for the rest of your chalkstream fishing lifetime.
The group is limited to just four and you will be fishing a beat on a tributary of the famous River Test, at Bullington Manor. One of our highly experienced Fishing Guides/Instructors will lead the day, which will cover all of the following with plenty of time dedicated to fishing itself!
• Tackling up for rivers
• Nymph vs. dry fly
• Tactics for brown trout vs. grayling
• What flies and when to use them
• Entomology in a nutshell
• Stalking and river tactics
Each day runs from 9.30am-5.30pm, with a break for lunch. There is a fully equipped Fishing Cabin at Bullington Manor and a wide choice of local accommodation in Stockbridge, just six miles away.

If you are not familiar with the term it is best to look upon a Fishing Guide as a blend of knowledgeable gillie, qualified instructor, amiable fishing companion, local tour guide, chauffeur and portable tackle shop all rolled into one - for that is what we aim our Guides to be. All our Guides are true chalkstream experts, with a strong background in fly fishing tuition – indeed they all hold nationally recognised qualifications such as GAIA or APPGAI. Read more about our guides. But more than that they are engaging and informative companions on the riverbank, blending information, hints and anecdotes to help you get the best from the day. |
|||||||||||
Taking a Guide is a great way to combine a fishing day with an element of instruction, where you can brush up on your river craft. Book the Guide in conjunction with the beat of your choice or talk over with us which beat might be best.
Location: River beat of your choice (at additional cost) |
Price includes all guiding and/or tuition services (9.30am-6pm), licence, tackle and local transportation. |

aim is to make it fun, informative and fire the enthusiasm for many
future fishing trips in the years to come. |

Tony King is an experienced salmon fisherman and an accomplished Spey caster who has guided in Scotland and Norway. Spey casting is one of the most pleasurable ways of fishing; the rhythmic motion that pushes your line across a glistening salmon river again and again, with the long rod that lets you mend the line to ‘fish’ the water, is hypnotic. Although you are handling a big rod, as long as 15ft with lines
up to 10 weight, once you have mastered the rudiments of the Spey
cast it is amazing how effortless it becomes. |
|||||||||||
If you’ve done some fly fishing and are confident using a trout rod, casting for salmon should hold no terrors for you.
The best place to learn how to Spey cast is on moving water and we are fortunate to be able to use the salmon beats on the River Test at Broadlands. The wide, open river is ideal and there is always the chance of catching a salmon in the process! The format of the day will depend very much on how quickly you progress but, in broad terms, the morning will be spent with intensive instruction in various technical aspects of the double handed rod and various line profiles and the afternoon fishing under Tony’s watchful eye.
There will be time for advice on tackling up, knots, leaders and flies. Whether you are fishing for salmon in Scotland, Alaska, Canada, Norway and Russia or sea trout in Argentina this day is suitable for you.
Location: Broadlands, River Test, Hampshire |
Prices are for a full day (9.30am-5.30pm) to include tuition and tackle. |

Saltwater fly fishing is a demanding activity; often as not you will be casting directly into the wind with a stiff rod and dealing with a heavy fly in an unfamiliar environment. Being prepared for these challenges is what our two options are all about. Rocky coastline day In this introduction to fishing along a rocky coastline you will fish in varying depths of water and be shown how to identify potential fish holding areas and features. |
|||||||||||
You will use different line densities and learn a variety of casting skills to cope with the wind, lines and weighty flies. You will need chest waders and to be physically fit. We will be targeting bass, mullet and pollock on these days.
For travelling overseas the skills will be ideal for striped bass, trevally, kingfish, bluefish, taylor, rooster fish and elf.
Flats days
Fishing along sandy flats, of a comfortable wading depth, where fish spotting techniques, stealth and fast response are essential. Learn how to rapidly deploy your line and cope with adverse conditions. Develop line management and depth judgement skills. Chest waders are needed. We will be generally targeting sea bass and mullet on these days.
The techniques will stand you in good stead for any trip to the Caribbean, Kiribati or Seychelles fishing for barracuda, bonefish, grand trevally, permit or tarpon
Location: Dorset coast |
Prices are for a full day to include all tuition and tackle. NB Clients must provide own chest waders. |
