Chalk stream Fishing

River Piddle

The Piddle (a delightful name for schoolboys with a piscatorial bent) is one of the most natural of all the chalkstreams. Weaving it’s way through the beautiful and secluded parts of Dorset, the Piddle is not stocked and is managed with the lightest of hands.

It rises at Alton Pancras north of Dorchester and heads for Puddletown where it turns east and for 16 miles flows towards the sea at Poole Harbour, where it enters the English Channel, just half a mile north of the Frome.

For anyone searching for true wild trout fishing, this has be one of the rivers to head for.

BERE REGIS

There are four beats to the Bere Regis section of the River Piddle all of which are wading, catch and release fishing.

It wouldn’t be fair to classify Bere Regis as ‘difficult’ for there are days when the wild fish give themselves up with extraordinary ease and in great numbers. However that said, be prepared for technically challenging fishing; short casts, light tippet, small flies, delicate presentation where the emphasis is on experimentation and searching out the likely lies.

Of the four beats two are best for one Rod, two ideal for two Rods. Chest waders are really essential in the first half of the season; you might get away with hip waders in the second half of the season, but I would not recommend it.
